But it isn't why we bought the car. Your own car usually isn't a status symbol to you.

Of course they do. And of course you do.
And therefore, of course it is. If you CAN avoid buying a car thought of as inferior or scorned, you will. That's as much a status call as buying a high-end car because of what other people think. The only difference is financial means.

It doesnt mean you buy it to show status.. It means that it shows status. Ive seen some people driving aston martins - most people dont recognize aston martins. I do and when i see someone in one then i know that dude is rich or that lady married a rich dude (sorry women, i never asume you bought it with your own money).
