I played Alan Wake. It came free when I upgraded my Xbox. It was unique...but not my style.
KoA brings nothing new to the table but what it does it does well.

Skyrim is what an MMO should be like but single player.
Amalur plays like an MMO currently plays as but is single player.
I like Skyrim better, but Amalur is okay.

Skyrim fails miserably in two areas.
1) Combat. It's ludicrous.
2) Loot. It is less then underwhelming.
KoA shines in both these areas.
They are totally different games but I think Yoss put it well...KoA is a breath of fresh air in the genre.

No kidding. Skyrim combat is so bad I don't know how people put up with it. It feels like wooden puppets wailing on eachother. No sense of physicality at all.
