It's not theft. It's copyright infringement.
Two totally different things. While such infringement might result in a loss of revenue by the copyright holder, it often does not, as the person infringing would not have spent money to buy whatever it is in the first place.
I torrent crap all the time, not to avoid paying for it, but because I was in no way interested enough in whatever it is to actually pay for it. The only reason I took the slight effort to download it was because I was bored and it didn't cost anything. It's more like free advertising for whoever it is that created the stuff than it is theft. If I end up being surprised and liking it, I might actually purchase crap from the creator in the future.
If I really want something (Book, movie, magazine, whatever) I want to own a copy and want to pay for it. I like supporting people who create stuff I like.
If it's a TV show they can suck it. They broadcast it, I already pay for cable, so I already paid for the damn thing. Can't steal something you paid for.
