So long as we still get charged a fee using credit in many places, cash isnt going anywhere.

1. They're not allowed to charge you a fee for using credit.

2. You pay an around-the-back fee anyhow because the card company charges the merchant 2%. Everyone is already paying more right now because of credit cards. You just don't see it on your bill because that way stupid people don't realize they're paying it.

Most small businesses around here have a $10 minimum for credit purchases. So long as this practice is allowed, cash isnt going anywhere.

When I tried to pay for my car tags online the state wanted to hit me with a 3% convenience fee for using a credit card. I mailed the greedy bitches a check.

Unless something changed when I wasn't paying attention, there used to be lots of gas stations that had a credit price and a cash price. The credit price was always higher by a couple cents.

Remember to send a nice thank you card to Sen. Dodd and Rep. Frank for this.

Minimum purchases for credit cards weren't allowed until Dodd/Frank.

They can offer a cash discount. They can't charge you a fee for using a card. That may seem like a semantic difference but for various reasons in practice it actually isn't.

Huh, you learn something every day. Well, that's one thing the bill got 100% right.

When you bought a pack of gum with a credit card merchants used to be forced to eat the 30 cent loss they were taking from the fee. Which just meant they jacked up pricse on everyone else. So everyone else was subsidizing you paying with your credit card.

Allowing credit card minimum purchase value is an excellent change. It would be even better if they passed a law requiring you to pay the fees, not the merchant.

In practice, I'm paying more with one than I am the the other. Whether I'm being discounted for using cash or charged a fee for the credit really makes no practical difference at the end of the day..

seems like semantics to me

There are reasons you basically only see cash discounts offered at gas stations. And only in some states, btw.

It isn't just a coincidence.

No way anyone in DC is going to do away with it based on that fact alone.
