Always.
The primaries are where your real choice is.
Having to choose between 6-8 people more closely defines your voting preferences than having to choose between a mere two.
And ofcourse all too often good candidates never make it to the big dance and need your help in the primaries so they don't disappear.

Sounds like 'Only if I'm excited about a candidate' would fit that, if not perfectly.

Of coursed I do, the low turn outs at primaries is when republicans in California get propositions passed.

I work as an election judge. Nobody cares about primaries. There was one a few years ago that only 6 people came to vote for. Out of a precinct with 1200 voters. I got a lot of reading done that day
