Quietly when nobody cares they will announces its being discontinued. Hybrids are a viable tech for the future. Battery tech still needs to be improved.

If college kids can make solar/electric powered cars with some ridiculously small budget I don't see why a large company can't develop an affordable electric vehicle. Oh wait, yes I can. They don't want to.

Those solar cars the kids made dont meet the DOT safety requirements or other things. They are just for show.
A solar car needs lots of heavy, expensive batteries.
