I was 8 or 9 years old and I thought boys were just naturally better at physical stuff than girls. Then, my cousin, Lynn, who was a year or two younger than me, ran faster than me and her older brother and a couple of our guy friends. Over and over.
It may sound kind of silly, or like one of those insights that only happens in books, but, from that moment on, I was much more skeptical of stereotypes than I had been.
The logic goes -

When I realized that my think of, "THEY should do something about that" was stupid. Who are "they"? By giving them the power to fix an injustice you also give them the power to create injustice that is far worse. The only power that cannot be abused is no power. It took me to about 20 to figure that out. Up until then I was as mindless a liberal as everyone else. It takes three things for that to happen. 1, Be open minded enough to understand you were badly wrong. 2, The ability (AKA IQ) to understand you were badly wrong. 3, Having the information that disputes the "common" information that is taught.
The next thing that a conservative learns is to keep quiet about it or have the ability to withstand the hate and slander you will get from liberals. Most conservatives learn to just keep quiet and pretend to agree with the liberal rants. It is one of the reasons that liberals believe they are a majority when facts show them to be a narrow minority. (20% liberal vs. 40% conservative.)
