My father tells a story about a drafting instructor who bounced a textbook off of a drafting table from across the room and hit a smart ass in the face.

Personally I once thanked my Latin teacher in high school for wasting our time by standing out in the hall for twenty minutes. She broke down and never came back; it turns out she had been out in the hall crying. So I don't really get credit; it was the class before that made her upset, I was just the proverbial straw.

I once had a math teacher whose class I had been in for two years take me out in the hall and cry about how I kept mocking her and screwing around in her class despite having considerable potential.

Once in 7th grade we had a substitute math teacher come in once. The kids, including me, started talking and basically disrespecting him while he was trying to teach, and he was trying to be polite at first to get our attention. But we just kept ignoring him.

Then he grabbed the math book, yelled "Shut up!", then slammed the book into the chalkboard so hard that he punched a hole through it. Needless to say, we all shut up after that, and listened to him. The hole remained in the board for the next few weeks, and we didn't disrespect any future subs that year lol.

I cry every time I read your posts.

I had an honors biology teacher in 10th grade who was also a super fit scuba instructor pull me outside of class at the end of the year and said to me direct quote "If I thought I could get away with it I would beat you bloody all over that locker you're leaning on."

My crime? I hated his class, his style of teaching and stated after the first month of the year that I would get an 80% and no better. Last quarter came and I had an 88 for the year so I skipped handing in a end of term paper which dropped my over all grade to 80.3%.

He could not fathom that I could tell him I would not hand in the paper and did not care if it dropped me to an 80.

I thought the entire episode was hysterical. I got the exact reaction I wanted he just didn't do it in front of the class.

I also did it in an era where he would have been on youtube and I would have had 200K in the bank.

There was a moment were I was truly waiting for said beating to come...the dude had one expression at all times...dead serious.

quite the tough guy

I like the part where he deliberately got a lower grade to try to make his teacher angry.

Classroom management is an art. When I was teaching in Oakland, my attention getting device were "Buddhist tingshas." There would be complete chaos people being stoned in class laughing out of control, someone trying to feel up the girl in the row next to him, thrown objects whizzing around the room etc and I would give use my gentle tingsha bell. I called everyone back to the center. My almost all Black and Latino class would look at me with affection and say: Mr P is tripping! And then we would study how the blood diamonds oppressed ...

Of course I was fired!

I tormented him fir two years before that happened, though.

We had another teacher break into tears he was so mad.
Electonics class, someone would say ohmmmmmmmmm every time he talked about ohms law.
and then wed chant his name, which was slocum.
He didbt last 20 mins that day

Some people can't deal with the situation where control is illusory. Once that illusion fails they fall to pieces. I have seen perfectly fine instructors lose their minds over very minor issues. Most of the time it's a learning experience for them, but occassionally it leads to them finding a new vocation. Leadership skills play a big part in keeping things eve keel, but unfortunately most people teaching never get the training they need.
