Rush gives away his show to many affiliates. Having more affiliates means more potential listeners and that lets him charge more for the national ads (some of which he reads himself). But the affiliates only want even a free show so they can sell the remaining ad slots to various national and local companies.
A lot of the affiliates are having to fill their ad slots with the nearly free PSAs which isn't enough to cover the costs of broadcasting a free show. So they need to decide to either wait it out and hope the advertisers for the ad slots they control come back or drop the show for something more profitable.
Rush himself has enough money to wait out the return of advertisers, the only question is how many radio stations will still be playing his show once they do come back.

I dont much care either way. Dont listen to him, but he has the numbers of people that do. Either way, on or off air makes no difference to me. Never have listened to him or beck.
