Last few years money has been really tight but I finally got in a job with financial stability and im trying to clear all my bad debt.

I owe for a Gi bill issue and tried to call and get a plan set up so I can pay it off... this is how it went.

VA: We dont have the account (my word) anymore it has been sent to the debt collection agency, here is the number...

Debt collector: we dont have the account anymore it has been sent to the treasury department, here is the number...

Treasury dept: We dont have the account anymore it was sent back to the VA but they never anotated why...

Va: Debt collectors should still have it...

Ok WTF do I do now... we got tenative approval to refiance and debt to the VA for education is a question on the paperwork, I want to pay it off but if people dont know where it is whats the next step?

I am about to call each agency back and ask to speak with a supervisor and see what they say and write down their name just in case something bites me later on this, plus the only other thing I can see to do is let USAA decide what I put down in that spot if the answer is still the other guy has it.

If it is enough money, hire a lawyer. Try to find one who works with government debt/taxes.

He may tell you to get all 3 agencies to put what they already told you in writing. In which case, he can tell you if that's sufficient to consider the loan null and void. If they don't have a proper record or contract paperwork on it, then it probably isn't collectable.

Just forget about it. In a few years no one will remember and credit scores are meaningless these days anyway.

You have one chance to get this right, do not blow it.
Do not sound like a noob. Prepare the conversation in your head before each call. Have questions written down and ready.
Make the calls and get ahold of a supervisor. Ask your questions, get the answers, do NOT revealwhat anyone else has said unless absolutely needed.
Ask for the supervisor to send you a statement/paperwork with what he just said in writing.

Wash/repeat with each new entity that you get directed to.
The only thing you are seeking to do is gain written verification that each office is no longer dealing with your case.

Not that this is helpful or any consolation but it is somewhat amusing to think that loan sharks would never have any confusion about who owes what.

I really don't think you need to tell anyone this. It's assumed when we see your icon.

I can walk to the VA if you give me your full name, DOB, full SSN, mothers maiden name and figure out whats up for you?

The main thing is to get everything down in writing.

Talking with creditors on the phone, in general, is a bad idea. It isn't going to help you, and could very well hurt you if you make the wrong statement.

Worst advice you can take. Debt to the government never goes away.

The suggestion of the lawyer was best. You are in over your head. So is anyone attempting to help you except Mo or Baym. Get a professional.
