The investigation appears to have sparked a chain of events that led to the 62-year-old's demise, one of the most important political dramas in China in recent years.
It suggests there is a fierce battle taking place ahead of the leadership change, expected to happen at the Chinese Communist Party's 18th congress later this year.
They heard how the city's police chief, Wang Lijun, told Mr Bo in January that his family was being investigated. The politician apparently reacted angrily and demoted Mr Wang, disregarding established practices.
There have been rumours about Bo Xilai's family for some time, many centred on his son, Bo Guagua.
He studied at one of Britain's most expensive private schools, Harrow, before going on to Oxford University.
Photographs that appear to show him enjoying himself at parties have whizzed around internet sites.
Speaking at a political meeting just before he was removed from office, Bo Xilai hit back at the rumours surrounding his family.
He claimed that his wife and son had no assets, adding that his son's schooling was paid for by a scholarship.
Reports that Bo Guagua drives a red Ferrari were also false, he said.
Hmm, busted by the secret police for enjoying the nation's stolen wealth a bit too publicly? Or perhaps this was an effective political coup by his opponents with the family stuff a convenient excuse?

I appreciate that you are fascinated by my appearance, but you should really stop hitting on me, I can assure you I'm not interested.
I wonder if Bo and his family will shortly have an 'accident' or if he will simply 'retire' and 'disappear' in the near future? Maybe he will simply escape to the west with his ill gotten gains. Assuming he was actually guilty of not living the life of a proper communist. Hard to tell when all we have is Pravda.

Are you expressing sympathy for a corrupt official? Even if he wasn't, he was one of the major proponents of Communist revival. So I'd say your sympathies are misplaced. There's a reason why I'm sure plenty of people have told you to know what you're talking about if you're going to run your mouth.

I'm entertained by the 'news' that is allowed out through official channels in China. Bo was officially pulled down and ousted, I'm curious about the narrative the government has decided to make public.
