A holy war of sorts has broken out for the soul of a central Florida county.
Almost a year after a Polk County Christian group spread holy oil on a stretch of local highway to ward away "evildoers," an atheist group struck back on Saturday, using water from a tank labeled "unholy water" to symbolically wash away the group's blessing.
The atheist group, Humanists of Florida, described last year's blessing on Highway 98 as a hostile gesture toward non-Christians.
The group also decried a billboard put up by the religious group, Polk Under Prayer, that praised local officials, including the mayor of the city of Lakeland and the Polk County sheriff, who has a legal beef with the head of the atheist group.
"To spread oil on the roads of Polk County and pray for the incarceration of all non-Christians is dangerous, bigoted, and un-American," director Mark Palmer wrote on the website of Humanists of Florida.
Richard Geringswald , director of Polk Under Prayer, defended last year's blessing, saying it was performed so that "God would protect us from evildoers, mainly the drug crowd, that they would be dissuaded to come in to the county," according to Bay News 9 in Tampa-St. Petersburg.
Another religious group, The Christian Churches of Polk County, weighed in on the controversy.
"Today, the atheists try to wash away our prayers by scrubbing down Highway in Lakeland, FL," a commenter on the group's Facebook page posted, adding, " My Dear Christian brothers in Christ...we'd better pray for their souls. Father, forgive for they know not what they do! I wonder if we're still in America?"
But atheist group president Ellen Beth Wachs said their protest is hardly anti-Christian.
"We understand that Christians have their way of life, and we're not trying to take it away from them. But they need to realize that there are many other types of faith, and people of non-faith as well," according to Bay 9 News.
The Polk County sheriff, Grady Judd, last year arrested Wachs on charges including posing as a lawyer and possession of marijuana. Wachs contests the charges, and filed a suit in Federal District Court in Tampa last June, accusing Judd of harassment and unnecessary arrest.
Last week, members of Polk Under Prayer buried what they called "prayer bricks" along Interstate 4, promising "the wicked shall be destroyed."
But the members of the atheist group saw that as another inhospitable act.
"We don't want anyone to believe they're not welcome in any county in Florida," atheist group member Gael Murphy told WFTS-TV.

Blessings don't exist humans do not have that kind of telepathic powers.
