4th graders typically don't have social studies.

I did, and that was 30-ish years ago. And in my travels around the country I was going to a freakin ALABAMA school that year. Not exactly "top of the heap".

We've gone so far backwards that we don't have any American history, state history, or history-integrated social studies at all in most Elementary schools?

It's stupid. In math it works to have problems that make students more interested in solving them, for instance sports like shooting percentages or something or probabilities of kicking 50 yard field goals. Unless the class is full of little Blue Arrows kids, it is totally inappropriate to have a problem that could potentially offend a large percentage students/families.

Umm, no? Your anecdote, while very cute, really has no bearing on the discussion. I didn't say "All schools don't have Social Studies", I said "most". I have no hard facts to back it up, but I'd wager most didn't 30 years ago, either. Social Studies as a separate course typically begins at 6th or 7th grade, depending whether or not the class is using a middle school or jr. high model.

That's not to say that teachers don't teach social studies in the 4th grade. Some of the more clever ones mix it in with other topics. Like math, for instance.
