Why can't we get anything right with race in this country? Whether it's the left jumping immediately on the overwrought hate crime/lynching throwback bandwagon and turning it into a civil rights event, or the right trying to rationalize it as another example of "omgwhatifhewaswhite?", to the media sensationalizing the whole thing, it's just all pathetic. I had never in my life heard the term "white Hispanic" used as a qualifier before this either.
We are such noobs.

There are definite "chicken or egg" components to racism in America.
I.e.:
Is racism prevalent because race is constantly a topic in media? or...
Is race constantly a topic in media because racism is prevalent?
The whole "educate people by constantly reminding them how racism is bad" concept really just pushes race to the forefront, keeping it in peoples' minds and keeping people resentful of the constantly reinforced differences... meanwhile, without laws to protect against racism, we'd be back to Jim Crow laws in 20 years.
I think the answer is to continue to keep laws around to enforce equal treatment and to discourage discrimination, but to teach about sameness rather than about differences and to attempt to minimize or deemphasize differences as much as possible. I don't really have a better answer to that, but the state of affairs also makes me sad.
