A few years ago they all decided vampires were getting played out so a zillion authors jumped on the werewolf bandwagon and once werewolves started getting played out that all started writing books about faeries. Now that they've published a thousand similar books on vampires, werewolves and faeries we are getting a whole smattering of urban fantasy novels with small twists, like necromancers, ghosts, clairvoyants, demons, exorcists, etc. etc. etc.
I wonder if by the time all of these sub ideas die down vampires will be back in fashion.

Yoss do you read any actual literature at all?
Or just neo-fantasy trash by 3rd rate writers, trying desperately to cash in some fad.

Vampires have always been the best of the various fantasy/horror semi-human monsters.
Werewolves are not bad but they are not as interesting.

The magic comes from combining them to create racial war plot lines

Define literature. I've read fantasy books with more intelligent things to say than some of the 'classics' that are also really boring with uninteresting stories.
If your assumption is that all fantasy novels are shallow then I can only assume you've never read much outside of 'literature'.
There is a lot of shallow, hackneyed fantasy stuff out there just like there is in any genre, there is also a lot of intelligent, well crafted stuff by talented authors who can combine an exciting story and setting along with a deep plot and theme to create something a whole hell of a lot better than Hemingway or Faulkner (at least from my perspective).
To answer your question, advanced placement English in high school and a college education have exposed me to a whole hell of a lot of 'literature'.

OK, I'm curious.
What do you recommend? In general I mean, doesn't have to be fantasy.
I need inspiration, randomly browsing the bookstore or library is well, kinda meh.

I sat here for ten minutes trying to think how to classify and separate out these authors and I was dissatisfied with everything I came up with. So I am just going to make a list of current non-shallow authors I think fit, some of them are deeper than others but none of them are hackneyed sword and sorcery swill. Patrick Rothfuss, Neil Gaiman, Jacqueline Carey, Steven Erikson (thought his last book is pretentious self indulgent garbage), John Scalzi (sci-fi), Brandon Sanderson, George RR Martin.
As far as the subject of this thread goes, the paranormal stuff is more shallow on average but that doesn't mean it is necessarily bad. It is not for everyone but if you want to give it a try authors like Kim Harrison, Jim Butcher and Patricia Briggs can give you an idea of what the genre has to offer.

No, but it is on my list of books that won awards that I want to read eventually. I think I might actually have the first book already. I don't usually trust women who try to hide the fact that they are women by using initials as their publishing name but I will go ahead and read it.
