I don't know about werewolves being a fad. Maybe back in the early 80s. They've never really taken off, despite being superior to vampires in every way.

I think it's the complete opposite. Werewolves are boring because they are more physical and less cerebral. The interesting thing about the vampire is the slow process of corruption. Werewolves are just werewolves. The moon comes up or someone pisses them off and they go psycho for a little while. It's the difference between black and white and shades of gray.

Werewolves represent fear of the beast within. They're the abusive, alcoholic father who tries to sort out why he just dislocated his kid's arm. Werewolves are truly horrific because they mirror us. Vampires represent, I don't know, neck fetishists?

I prefer the zombie craze because slaughtering hordes of nameless, faceless undead has a certain visceral satisfaction and there are always options for exploring what it means to be human and living in a "lifeboat" situation.
