Russia tried out the whole liberal paradise/utopia thing. Communism, state Atheism, the works. It must have been very reassuring to the populace to know the worst thing that could happen is a gulag instead of going to hell. The soviets were all for world peace and stuff too.

Problem is you can't force people to become atheist as much as you can't force people to be Christians. For this to happen it would take a huge discovery or something along those lines and still wouldn't be enough to switch everyone over.. People are ignorant to the point of being completely blind.
