Apparently this kid stole $100 from a relative and his dad is making him stand on a street corner with a sign saying, "I am a thief, I stole money from a relative."
A psychologist says children don't gain insight from public humiliation. I call BS. The kid will be out there for a few hours a day thinking about how Fuked up everything is. Mostly he'll mentally bitch about how strict and unfair his father is, sure, but I don't doubt he'll have learned his lesson.
Is it the best lesson? Probably not, but to say no insight is gained is pretty ridiculous IMO.

I don't think humiliation is a good tool for raising kids. Many people do though. Their kids will probably suck either way so I don't really care that much.

I keep repeating it but my favorite was the kid standing at the freeway off ramp with a sign saying "since I cut class and am going to flunk out of school my Mom wants me to practice for my career".

There is a judge in Texas who uses this same approach with many first offenders. They have to agree to it as an alternative to jail. Most don't come back a second time.
this shrink probably fits one or more (all 3 isn't hard to imagine)of the following:
1 He/she is stupid
2 has no kids
3 became a shrink for self-help because he/she is a nut/mess.

Terrible idea. Humans only fail when they give up. Letting them get used to shame and humiliation puts them one step closer to that. Kudos for being a stupid douche to your kids I guess. if your kid cuts class that's your fail not theirs. maybe you should put on a sign.

I think that really depends on the person as to whether it works or not. Some people are deeply concerned about how they 'look' to other people. Others are not.

This.
Certain personalities would not recover from public humiliation and you could end up doing more harm then good.

 Ok, that's pretty good.
I think that kind of public humiliation effort for kids is pretty dumm though. I'm behind standing up to your kid when they try that control game by making scenes in public to embarrass parents into capitulation, but the OP stuff seems dumm to me.
