Most likely, it is more cases being identified as we learn more about it. I doubt the percentages have changed that much at all.

Indeed, there is no objective laboratory test for it, it is just based on subjective interpetation of symptoms from the DSM... when the next DSM comes out I am pretty sure I could make 8/10 kids qualify with a litle subjective interpretation. I am not saying autism is non existant, but 1 in 88 do not have autism.

I'm pretty sure its a crock of shit.
Autism is becoming as ludicrously over-diagnosed as ADD (that is hyperbole, ADD is so over-diagnosed some of these should go to prison over it).

The problem is the autism spectrum is pretty big, and there are no medical criteria for diagnosis.
Right now all you can do is observe a kid's behavior. If they display enough of the behavioral symptoms then they are diagnosed.
This is a big problem because you could be diagnosing children with the same disorder based on their symptoms, but they might all have a different reason for the behavior.
In a lot of cases there is no question something is going on, but no one can really say what. Even after diagnosis treatment is uncertain. Different things work for different kids. There really isn't anything concrete for anyone to go on.

There are a large number of sensory based disabilities that share symptoms with autism. The autism label is attached to funding so there is an economic incentive to slap the label on.
