Dr Ray Muzyka, co-founder of Bioware, added: "With the Mass Effect 3 extended cut we think we have struck a good balance in delivering the answers players are looking for while maintaining the team's artistic vision for the end of this story arc."
I can only imagine the conversation between Bioware and EA when Bioware said they were going to do this.

This will just be the first alternate ending. You will be able to buy additional alternate ending DLC for $10 bucks each that will change the colors of the outfits people wear and other important things!
