I never did play that. But I heard a lot about it. Was UO the game where if you got killed you could drop like armor and stuff?
Yes, you drop everything when you die. (well, except newbie clothes and newbie weapons (which do gimp damage of course)).
Even if your friend rezzes you immediately, an enemy (or someone just wandering by) might grab some of your stuff and run for it.
However, gear is super cheap. And if you don't suck at PvP, you turn a profit in looted gear every time you play. Main difference is if you lose the fight, you really lose it, as you have to go back to town or your house to get more gear.

I played Uo for a month. All I really remember doing is hiding in a tree and leaving a roll of quarters on the key that played my lute.

Dang that would suck. My first MMO was daoc. I was never into RPG's until a friend I was in the Marine Corps with got me into it. I was always playing Counter Strike or Return to Castle Wolfenstein/Doom 1-3, only FPS games. So with DAoC I got spoiled right off the bat.
Game sounds kinda tough. Loose all your gear when you die? haha

I started with 2k gold, bought an outfit for about 500 and banked the rest. Went out and leveled up my skills. Got to the bank, dropped off my extra loot and went uptown via the outside road (Vesper). A pk was sitting there waiting. He tried to attack me but was too slow. I high tailed it (been training animal taming and had a horse), but I decided to go back. He attacked me again, did some damage and chased me all the way to the guards. I called them and he had about 150 of each regent.
Currently working on my magery
Only thing I forgot to do was cut up his corpse and take his head.
He did get his revenge on me, but all of my stuff was banked and he tried to gloat. I laughed in his face.

Yeah, I remember playing UO back in 2000. It was pretty unforgiving if you died, aka you'd turn into a ghost, and anyone could loot your body, including the mobs (dragons in particular liked to steal stuff, so a dragon that killed a lot of players had awesome loot lol).
Players who deliberately killed other players enough times (I think it was at least 5) would become known as murderers, and their name would be displayed in red instead of the normal blue. Some were really good, and you learned to avoid them, while others were accidental (I think you could turn red by killing innocent NPC's too). When you got killed by another player, you could put a bounty on their head, and anyone who killed them would get a reward, so "bounty hunter" players also existed solely to attack anyone in red.
Oh, and anyone with a red name would get nearly insta-killed by guards (who only had melee at first, but players exploited this by trapping them so eventually they got the ability to shoot lightning from a distance, which also insta-kills you) if they approached towns, so it was more of a wilderness problem. You were generally safe in town, but if you were exploring, or just mining/chopping wood far away from town, they could also gank you there.
Shortly after I played, they introduced a new zone, I think called Trammel (and I think the PvP original lands was called Felucca), which was the exact same map, except it was PvE only, unless you were in a guild (you could attack guilds you were at war with, or other devious players could gank their own guildmates, which I witnessed firsthand, aka someone joins a guild, then kills their members and loots them, then leaves). As much as some players whined about "carebear land", the PvE zone was much more populated than the free-for-all PvP land.
I quit a few months after DAOC came out, but from what I heard they introduced scrolls that you could use to enchant stuff in your pack so it couldn't be looted (and hence why later games like DAOC didn't give you the ability to loot other players, nor did you have to worry about losing your gear if you died).
It didn't have a leveling system, so you got better at skills by using them, so a player chopping wood would gain lumberjacking skills, which helped increase damage if you used an axe to fight with. But you sacrificed defense (aka shields) which a sword user could train in.
It was fun for its time, but I don't think too many new players would enjoy it nowadays, especially if they've been spoiled by WoW.
