The sad thing being that this wouldn't deter me overmuch, unless I'd seen them licking something nasty in the past hour or so.

When I found Littles, she was only 3 weeks old. I weaned her, taught her about the litterbox, all of it. She didn't even know to keep herself clean back there yet. The mother cat normally does, when they're that age. I'd get a paper towel, wet it with warm water, and clean her lil butt.

I remember sitting on the floor by the coffee table one morning, eating a bowl of Frosted Flakes for breakfast and watching TV. The bowl sat on the table in front of me. I looked away for a moment. When I looked back, she had hopped up on the coffee table and was drinking out of the side of the bowl opposite to me.

I patted her on the head, said "ou lil." and had another spoonful from my side of the bowl. I really didn't care. lol.

When my brother and I were kids, I had my own version of mealtime shenanigans. If he'd been annoying me lately and looked across the table at me during dinner, I'd open my mouth a bit wider than would have otherwise been necessary, with the chewed up food in my mouth pushed towards the front, displayed in its glory.

If done well, he caught an eyeful of that hell and was disgusted, while no one else even noticed I'd done anything at all. Heh.

There's a way to fix that....

Look at it from the perspective of the cat. When the sudden appearance of the pet carrier almost always predicts an unpleasant event (eg. a trip to the vet), of course the cat is going to dislike the carrier, be afraid of it, or even hide whenever the carrier appears. Cats are afraid of the pet carrier only when they've associated the carrier with unpleasant stimuli, and if you want them to not react negatively to the carrier, you have to break this mental association. You have to ensure that the presence/absence of the pet carrier has no predictive value re: upcoming negative events.

Instead of hiding it away in the closet, leave the carrier sitting out where the cat can access it whenever it wants. Place it either nearish where the cat eats (for further positive associations), or somewhere that's warm, quiet, and out of the way... a place that would be perfect for a catnap. Put a soft blanket and a few toys inside the carrier, and leave the door hanging open.

My cats sometimes even sleep in their carriers. Yes, freely and of their own will!
