Anyone remember playing the Ironman variant in Diablo? I thought it would be fun to start an Ironman sub-culture in DAOC. The rules would need to be modified to suit DAOC better but would be essentially the same concept. I am going to start a list of suggested rules. Please respond to this post with recommendations or changes. Ultimately though everyone should generally agree with the rules presented and play by them.
The general idea would be to add a layer of difficulty and complexity to DAOC and have a reason to revisit some of the content that is generally considered useless by modern DAOC standards.
1. No use of town-type services except possibly healing
- No repairs, no buying/selling, no gambling, no housing market, no auction whatsoever
- It is OK to talk to NPC's to fulfill quests but can not use any other service they offer.
??? Possibly OK to buy horse tickets as long as you don't sell anything at the horse merchant, who wants to walk everywhere.
2. No grouping with non-Ironman characters
- This is the primary reason people should generally agree to the rules so that the characters are similar
3. Death in Ironman is generally considered permanent, once you die you are done, make a new character
- Impossible to enforce since there isn't a "hardcore" mode as in Diablo
??? Possibly OK to be rezzed by an Ironman healer
??? Really could just drop this as the game doesn't cater to it and it will be pretty difficult as-is
4. No botting, 2nd accounts, trading with non Ironman characters, no player crafted gear, spell-crafting, alchemy, etc.
5. It would be helpful to have a naming convention to identify other Ironman characters, like using "Ironman" as the last name or having an "IM" somewhere in the name in upper-case surrounded by lower-case characters, have to join a specially created Ironman guild or something along those lines.
Ironman would generally limit classes to more self-sufficient classes but not necessarily. Pure Mages, healers, shamans may generally be poor choices for Ironman as they are squishy/ineffective solo'ers but rarity may make them even more desirable for Ironman groups. Ironman groups could be quite interesting and challenging when going up against boss mobs and such.
Any thoughts, feed-back would be appreciated and a general consensus of the rules would be helpful by those who would adopt them in-game.

For the millionth time, game is 9+ years old. People act like this game just launched. Why does everyone want to add asinine stuff?
People want to enjoy what is left of the game and see real issues addressed, like lag.

Uhm, i don't think he wants to actually change the game, but rather introduce a playstyle/rules that some people would follow. Leveling the oldschool way with no help basically
I've been thinking of doing that (kind of) with a new char to check out the new itemization in lowbie dungeons, fool around in the BGs etc when things are slow.
Why wouldn't you be allowed to sell stuff to NPCs if you're not allowed to use housing anyways? NPC armor too good?
What about aurulite/seals? Or would you be restricted to certain zones?
Btw, mages would probably do best as they aren't nearly as gear dependant as melee classes.

Its interesting, especially with permadeath. If there was some circumstance out of your control like a big lag spike that resulted in dying, you should be allowed to keep going.
I mostly like this because over the years daoc has been watered down so much that you almost need to make it harder with your own rules for it to stay fun.
One of the simple rules I enforced on myself last time I came to the game was that I couldn't use the in game maps, and that alone gave me a lot more immersion and felt like the old game it used to be. At least if they had in game maps, they should not show your location in real time on the map. I wish they would make a hardcore mode pvp server, like mordred was in the very beginning, but with permadeath and item looting.

Yes, I was in no way suggesting the dev's make an ounce of change to anything, this would be a completely voluntary rule-set adopted by the players.
I was on the fence on Auralite and Seals, on one hand the idea is to revisit areas that are often neglected now to experience the content again. Since you can't fix any gear I would lean towards allowing auralite and seals.
However, one of the big rules of Ironman type setups were no merchants to be forced to slap together piece-meal drops from creatures and then be forced again to get new gear as the old stuff breaks and is no longer effective. I may try a toon w/out the Auralite and Seals and see how it goes and then try one with and compare.
But yeah, keep any feed-back coming and if there is enough response we can kick around the rules a bit and settle on something.

Definitely no aurulite if you're looking for a challenge.

pfft who needs aurulight when the lowest dungeons give you +5 to two stat caps and ToAs >.>
better than any aurulight stuff~
with the way xp gain / rested / regen rates are, even 'oldschool' grinding is trivial. just a matter if you can handle the boredom~

I disagree, I think the hybrids/healers would do the best, second would be the pet classes.
