All Ywain servers are the same. BUT Don't play on Ywain1.
The different #'s of Ywain servers determine which server you log into in order to get to the character selection screen.
The reason you don't pick Ywain1 is because thats what most people picked and there is an overpopulation problem. Of course this has nothing to do with 99% of the server, only with player housing, since you can purchase a house (something you will definitely do eventually), but you must purchase on the server # that your characters are on. You won't be able to find a house if you create a character on Ywain1.
Other than the 2 things I just mentioned, it won't make a difference which Ywain# you pick, everyone plays together.
There aren't really other options. Mordred is a PvP server where you can kill everyone, but unfortunately there is no population there anymore, and Gaheris is a PvE only server where you can't kill other people, only monsters, but again low population and thats not what DAOC is about.

Welcome fellow Canadian!
There is only really one real server. Ywain1-10. So, just come on there and join everyone.
There are also two other types, Mordred and Gaheris. One has no players, and the other has no PvP... so only one real option.

Welcome Adacan,
If you have played many MMOs in the past get ready for a change. There are no MMOs even close to DAOC.
If you are used to no interupts and fast responce times get ready to get your ass handed to you.
But anyway good luck. Hopefully you'll be a natural.

Welcome, glad you found your way to DAOC, and I hope you enjoy it. Despite its age etc, this is still one of the best MMOs in existence. I live over in Victoria, BC
As said above, I would suggest you create your characters on Ywain10. All that means is that when you go to get a house for your characters, you will have a lot of choices as to location, whereas with Ywain1 you will be unable to find a house. Otherwise its all the same server in every other regard - so any player playing any Ywain will be available for you to group with etc. You can take your character to the other Ywains when in housing as well, so thats not a limitation. However you will want to create all your characters on the same Ywain whichever you pick (in order to switch to login a character on another Ywain you have to exit the program and restart it, which is a pain).
If you choose Midgard, and need any advice or help, feel free to get ahold of me. I am recently returned to the game (I played from release for the first 5 years of the game or so), and have been back for about 3 months.

may i also suggest reading some of the other newbiw threads as they have info too.
Daoc has battlegrounds for various levels such as 20-24 (Thidranki) and 35-39 (Molvik) which are the 2 most popular ones, both are always hopping. So if you think you like the BG's i would give some thoughts to place BG characters on a seperate ywain than your main high level characters

There is only one server, Ywain. However, when you create a character you will see there a number of instances of Ywain called Ywain1, Ywain2 .... Ywain10 etc. Which of these you choose only affects which housing zone you can build your house on, they had to make lots of extra instances of the housing zone to accommodate everyone. Don't create a character on one of the lower numbers like Ywain1, Ywain2, Ywain3 etc as it will be almost impossible to find a house plot to buy. Better to create a character on one of the higher numbers. Outside of housing, everyone is grouped onto the same PVE and RvR zones.
Contrary to some advice given here, if you create any alts make sure to create them on the same Ywain instance as your main character. This is because there's a bug which causes problems when porting back to a house which is on a different instance of Ywain. In other words, if you make your main character on Ywain10, put all your alts on Ywain10 as well.
When levelling up, make sure you try the different Battlegrounds (BGs) accessible via Channelers throughout the realm. These are zones where you can fight the enemy and also do quests (after level 10) that award much higher xps than the PVE zones because of the risks attached. Most of the BGs have at least some RvR action, but the really active ones are Thidranki (20-24), Molvik (35-39) and Cathal Valley (45-49). Molvik is especially busy and a lot of people keep their characters in there until they hit the realm point cap (and even after that). Don't rush to 50 straight away. Better to learn the game in the BGs and gain some RvR skills because the endgame RvR can be a bit daunting for brand new players.
If you want to stay in a particular battleground to enjoy the RvR rather than level out, you can make use of the /xp off command to temporarily stop earning xps. There's also a /rp off command to stop earning realm points too, if you don't want these capping you out of a particular BG.
Also, whilst Daoc is still a great game the outdated user interface doesn't do it any favours. You can improve this a little by using a custom UI. Bob's UI is a good one, see here and there are others too.
Have fun!

Castors do not really need a leveling template just a good focus staff and your trainer will give you that as you level up.
Tanks need good gear but it will be hard to get full sets until you have a farming toon or unless you can get a guild that will support your toons as you level. Some times you will find players that will give out gold that you can use to help support your characters while you level up.
Farming Aurulite while you level, and then using the Aurulite for gear or selling it for gold, can help in keeping your characters in gear.
This leveling guide may help a bit, not for gear but just for leveling.
Here is a thread about making money
Charplan is a great character builder (a program that lets you play with a hypothetical character’s stats, level, skills, etc . . and see different character configurations). It is a downloadable program and has all the updated stats.
Valmerwolf has great maps. For a good UI you can check the UI board but the previously listed “Bobs UI†is a good UI that many use.
