Not fixed at all
When you have some RR and can afford MoS 9 / Purge / IP / Dmg passives etc.
Along with things like stacking SoM/WH/Tark combined with FZ/PS/RR5 etc... melee ranger is quite nice if played well
But as I say, requires some RR and toys~

i respecced my ranger to melee and never played him again because he was so worthless after the nerfs

If you are gonna take a hibernian stealther and play them counter to the 'class design', spec and template a shade for ranged damage, at least that way your template and RA bonuses won't be completely useless once you are inevitably forced into a fight that isn't on your own terms.
If you want to play an archer as a melee toon, choose a hunter.
If you want to play an archer as a sniping toon, choose a hunter.
If you want to play an archer as a hybrid toon, choose a hunter.
The ranger should be the last stealther of any realm you should choose, and if you have your heart set on one, for the love of god don't spec it as a nightshade with less defense, less front loaded damage, less ranged damage and no access to posions just so you can gain access to IP.
IP will only delay the amount of time between the first combat round and you typing /rel and wondering why the hell you picked the class and specced them that way as you wait for the release timer to run out.

No real reason when Nightshades get excellent melee damage and poisons. They also get good ranged damage for free.
Ranger is really just Hybrid or all Ranged, imo.
