Oh granted. They have packaged up the essence of MMORPG gameplay, put in a ton of quests and pop-culture references, made it excessively easy and enjoyable enough that people feel compelled to continue playing (and thus paying). The gameplay was - when I tried it - substandard in my opinion, the graphics were distasteful, I hated the pop-culture references (the stupid effing dances and crap) and the game was "MMOs on easy mode" to my mind, with very little challenge that was of interest. The PvP sounds like its rather uninteresting (although perhaps not much different from our battlegrounds which are also not of much interest to me), and there is no real End game from what I can see. Mind you, Mythic seems to have done everything in its power to ruin the endgame in this game as well, starting with NF
That said, WOW is very successful and obviously was exactly what people wanted to play. They capitalized on their previous successful titles in other genres and pulled in an audience who had never played other MMOs and had nothing to compare them to. I still meet lots of WOW players who don't even know there were other MMOs out there - or even what MMORPG stands for. They just play WOW - I guess cause its there.
To make a bad analogy, DAOC always seems like going to a classy pub, WOW seemed like going to a local beer-garten...
