You may wish to use one of the custom UIs which include dots on the maps for all the ML and Artifact encounters, along with many named mobs or areas of importance. I recommend either Bob's UI or Eggi/Sohwyn (in my sig below).
Installing is not that hard, once you have a handle on where to put it and how to activate and customize it.
