How hard would this be to achieve for DAoC? I back up my character files a lot but I know a lot who don't. I was just wondering how hard it would be for them to add a couple /slash commands to enable it or something.
/characterset server - sets character files to be retrieved from server.
/characterset local - sets character files to be retrieved locally from your own computer.
/charsave local/server - sets to save character files locally or from server.
these toggles would be account wide
I don't know how big of a drag it would be on their system, god knows we don't need anymore lag, but I wouldn't think it'd be that much.
Just a random thought I had, and Im sure others have posted it before.

If you mean the files that contain your hotbars, qbinds, keyboard settings, rpg filters, etc., I'll throw in a plug for my own software. Mojo backs those files up automatically each time you launch a toon.
It's hard to guess how much time and money would be required for Mythic to do everything you describe. In fact, it's notoriously difficult for programmers to estimate how long it will take to do a job even when they are familiar with the source code and they are going to do all the work themselves. Neither of these things is true for anyone here.
But I'll guess anyway. My guess is, if they are lucky enough to have a programmer who can do both the C++ work on the client and the database stuff on the servers, it would take one week. Otherwise it would take two people from one to two weeks. The time includes meetings, debugging, and testing.

And I love your software for that. But it would be more for moving from pc to pc. Sometimes I log in on my netbook for some farming or crafting, and every time I'm like..dangit! I didn't update my char files. It would just be nice to have the option of server character files so that I don't have to update my PCs when I respec or something. Or install a new SSD like I did yesterday. Not that I don't have a backup of the files, would just be convenient is all.

A few separate points:
Windows has a feature called "roaming user profiles" that allows you to do what you want on a home network, but I think at least one of your PCs needs to run a server version of Windows. I'm not sure about that, though.
Another idea: I could easily add this feature to Mojo. Mojo would store your character info on Mojo's server and automatically keep your PCs in synch with each other. In fact I've thought of doing this, but people are already so nervous about Mojo because it stores passwords, I can't imagine how paranoid they'll get if it starts sending their config files to its server.
Yet another idea: I could add something less scary to Mojo that's almost as good. You may have noticed that when you run Mojo on two or more PCs at the same time, the Mojo's connect to each other on your network. They talk to each other. I could very easily make them share your config files so they all have the most recent version. But they would have to be turned on simultaneously for the update to take place. This isn't as nice as doing it with a server, which (theoretically, at least) is always on.
Of course you're right that this feature should be located on Mythic's servers as part of the game. I think WoW works that way now. But given Mythic's low revenues from DAOC, the fact that Mythic doesn't have programmers working on DAOC anymore except very occasionally, the fact that the source code is ten years old and (probably) nobody who works at Mythic is familiar with it anymore, etc., I think it's a safe bet that it's impossible for Mythic to make this kind of addition.

I will admit I was nervous about the password thing at first too, but I am so over that. I would be down for this, but you might have to have it as an opt-in kind of thing. Personally I would love this feature for mojo.
Lately I've just been like...man is there anything Mojo CAN'T do!?

Here's what I'm thinking of doing. The user will right-click a toon and select, "Import settings for this toon from another PC."
A window will pop up with an icon for each connected PC and the words, "Choose the PC to copy settings from for TOON." (In reality, the toon would have to be identified by name and server -- I'm just giving a rough idea.)
The user will click one of the PCs. A confirmation window will pop up asking, "Copy TOON's settings from PC XYZ to this PC? Your existing settings for TOON on this PC will be replaced. Yes or No."
A few seconds later, another window will pop up announcing whether or not the action took place.
I think this design will make it very obvious to the user that the remote PC has to be turned on and running Mojo in order for the settings to get copied.
That's the main thing I'm concerned about with this feature -- designing the interface so that idea is obvious to the user.
What do you think?

it would be nice if the character information was stored server side, but it isn't. Mythic/EA/Bioware isn't going to do this at this point, too much coding for the return in investment.
Got an idea for you, I wrote a set of utilities in 2008 and set it free to DAOC Users, Called the DAoC Chat Fixer. I added a backup and restore function for the .ini directories for Xp, Vista, Win 7 etc.... you can backup or restore your character files, user settings, qbinds etc.... to any machine on your network or DVD, Cd, etc..... just choose the path and copy.
Not knocking any other software, just providing another solution.
Go to www.nsaney.com and download it, or click the link in my sig to nsaneys site.
Enjoy
edit: just saw that nsaneys site is down, if you want to try it email me at expfighter@yahoo.com and i will send it to ya

They dont have the manpower or funds to accomplish what they could have done. These issues being among those. It would have made the game run smoother a long time ago. But the man power was reduced and many were let go or quit or moved to other companies. The money left because subscriptions dropped and they cant do certain things now because the teams are busy with other projects.
