My wife is very probably pregnant. Quite definitely maybe. Every test has come up negative but she looks like she's smuggling a beach ball. Her doctors have all told her that she's crazy and most definitely not pregnant because the test couldn't possibly be wrong. If she really is pregnant, the kid will be born very soon (within the next three weeks).

So I'm thoroughly stressed out. For one thing, we're pretty much living from paycheck to paycheck as it is... another mouth to feed wasn't something we planned. We haven't been able to prearrange anything with any of the local hospitals, so when she gives birth it will probably be in an emergency room... I just hope that it'll be during my vacation week and not a week early or a week late. My work takes me out of town one day a week and knowing my luck, that'll be the day. Also, because of the big gap between kids, there are no hand-me-downs left (especially since we moved in 2009 and got rid of a lot of baby stuff then).

The things I've mentioned above are the things that should be stressing me out. But I'm not. Instead, I'm obsessed with one single detail. The one thing that I just happen to think is the most important decision when having a child. The name.

My wife laid out the rules: no weird names, no family names, no historical figures or fictional characters or mythological creatures or deities, no alliteration, no initials that spell bad words... and she gets final veto power. There's probably a few thousand other rules that she just hasn't told me about yet. At least she made it simple for me; she has already picked out a girl's name and that's that. But if we have a boy, it's my job to name him.

I'm sure I'll come up with something good, but until I do, it's a distraction.

... and no names that have anything to do with Doctor Who in any way.

My son's name is Sebastian, I'm thinking either Maximilian or Gideon for the 2nd boy I have. I'm a big fan of old names.

For a girls name we have Katherine, the wife and I have it where we each pick out our own sexes name but the other can veto something to out there, so I've never really thought of any girl names.

We were on our way to a garage sale, looking for baby stuff, and saw a sign for another yard sale... actually we saw two signs and I was trying to find one of them and somehow found myself driving down the wrong side street and we ended up right in front of the other yard sale; the one with the crappy little sign that I almost didn't see. While an older gentleman tried to sell me sweaters (which I didn't really like), his wife sold my wife so much baby stuff that we had to take two trips to get it all, and she only spent twenty bucks. Their youngest grandchild had outgrown all of it and they were moving South and we were in the right place at the right time. I should have bought some sweaters.

Then, when we were on our way home with the second load of stuff, my wife noticed another little sign for a yard sale on another side street (but this one, I actually knew where it was) so we swung by there... we spent another twenty bucks on baby stuff and, because they were about to close down the sale and donate the rest to charity, we got a couple of big boxes of extra toys and clothes for free. Once again: right place, right time.

Ben Franklin once said that God helps those who help themselves. He must have hit some garage sales at three o'clock on a Saturday, too.

haven't you learned anything from his story? Don't give your stuff away because you'll have another kid afterward.
