While it's true that most of the game is a battle over control of the top base and keeping them captured 3 to 2, the pace of the game is very fast and it never really becomes boring with the random capture quests mixing things up. It's also more difficult than your friend implies to defend one base for too long because dominion doesn't cater to support classes very well, meaning that after every fight you win most of the team is low on health. Because the pace is so quick you will be at a huge disadvantage when the next fight kicks in unless you blue pill, and if you do that you'll be out of position when the other team gets back and they will likely be able to capture on you.
I'm willing to bet your friend is not playing good champions to assault bases (the melee guys need a 2nd person to succeed), not using the minions, and not using garrison.
