yet the washington redskins live on

exactly

if you are going to get rid of mascot names because they are offensive at least start with the right ones

so many to cut down... Redskins, Braves, Indians, Blackhawks, etc etc etc. I think it's retarded anyway and the indian mascots should be looked at more as a sign of respect instead of offensive... blah. so retarded.

calling someone a redskin is a sign of respect?

I am not familiar with skin color being referenced to show respect
point taken. What I meant though was that it should be a sign of respect that the people are viewed as a worthy mascot. Maybe that's more applicable to the Braves, Chiefs, and Blackhawks, but that's the point I was making. We're arguing two different points, each valid.

yeah, of course its not as easy as saying 'all native american mascots are bad' but there are some pretty interesting ones

tbh redskins would be out if i was in charge as would references to individual tribes like Seminoles, or a specific person like Blackhawks, etc

Chiefs is only made native by the decor they chose (surely there have been chiefs elsewhere in the world)

they could just turn Chiefs to Chefs and then get a different culinary celebrity to be their mascot every week...

anyways, in response to Jank Handey's words of wisdom, the minor league hockey team in Rochester is the Americans.

For one year, I attended Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois. At the time, and for many, many years before, the name of all of the sports teams was "The Siwash". Some author named George Fitch wrote a bunch of stories in which he referred to his alma mater (Knox College) as "Siwash College," and the school adopted the nickname "Old Siwash" many years later, in deference to his reference. Not long after I had left there, I found out that somebody had told them that Siwash was a derogatory term for Native Americans (a point which is still disputed, as the word had no such negative connotations in its original language), and the college responded by removing any reference to "Siwash" from the school buildings, stationery letterheads, team names, etc.. Now the teams are named "The Prairie Fire". There are still places like Siwash Rock and things like Siwash Sweaters that still bear that name, but "Old Siwash" is no more.
