most likey they did have a test system created and tested, but they don't have the resources to test something as full-scale as the real system.
when deploying real live systems, things can happen which were unaccounted for, or otherwise problematic.
A lot of times things can sometimes not connect up properly, or the scale of the upgrade can be more than anticipated.
Deplying a test system of 3 machines can be a LOT different than deploying a live system with 30.
Even large companies can have problems with upgrades and migrations unless they have the resources to completely double-up their systems (such as microsoft).
Microsoft can afford the hardware to create test systems AS their live systems, then simply flip the switch when they want to migrate, turning their live systems into junk or testing systems, and then replacing them with the old testing systems which become live.
Turbine can't afford that.
