syntax

129.142.85.84 www.treestats.com

129.142.85.84 treestats.com

not sure if treestats.com is used but never hurts

Actually the host file lives in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc. If you have a host.sam file make sure to delete the extenstion first.

That being said, editing the file didnt work for me. I also cleared my cache but it made no difference. I even tried using the IP directly in the address line which appeared to resolve to treestats, but it also appeared to require another extenstion such as /default.aspx as I just got the message that this page had been intentionally left blank.

so shoot me for forgetting drivers.

then you did it wrong , make the hosts file do a ipconfig /flushdns and ping www.treestats.com to see what it resolves to.

dont think it needs a hosts entry other than that ill try and look though

well its because it hosts other sites and the default site is blank.

pinging treestats does hit 129.142.85.84, but all 4 requests time out. I am not able to hit the page in a web browser either.

treestats or treestats.com?

there is a BIG difference.

the server might be set up to only handle www.treestats.com in which case, that is the EXACT name you have to use in the HOSTS file

actually.. the correct format is..

129.142.85.84 www.treestats.com treestats.com

each alias should be put on the same line as the address you're pointing it to.... 1 address.. multiple aliases.

and it works for me.try rebooting your PC after updating the HOSTS file. (make sure you're updating the right hosts file)

also.. could be your cache or other things... a reboot should help clear that up... maybe CTRL+F5

I used Drakier's format for the entry in the hosts file, flushed the DNS cache, and it works perfectly. I can hit the webpage at www.treestats.com and the in-game portion seems to find what it needs correctly, as well.

Thanks so much!!
