That is my recommendation. I've set up and currently run 3 boards based on php and it is very secure, easy to setup and maintain, and there are tons of user addons for customization.

important is to keep it updated, just as with windows and such, else it can go wrong just as easy.

my only problem with phpbb is that it has also been poked and exploited just as much as invisionboard has (if not more).
while it appears to be currently unexploited on a fully-patched system, what's to say that it won't be exploited again in the near future?
I guess you can say the same for anything, but as Zalliun said, there is no point in switching from one board to another that has also been swiss cheese.
try to find a good secure one that if possible has never had an exploit found, and has been around a while. (if that is possible)
