"As a programmer I always appreciated the work Elgarl put into ElTank.
I agree with that. As a programmer, he put a lot of work into ELTank.
but also, as a programmer, I don't appreciate the ethical standpoint he took when releasing ELTank. Maybe HE couldn't have seen the damage it was to cause, but the rest of the Decal Developers did, and warned him not to release it. He didn't listen, and THAT is what I mostly do not appreciate about Elgar. He ignored multiple warnings and the Decal Code of Ethics to release ELTank.
He's now taken his ball and gone home. I would agree that since he has done so, and has upset MOST of his "fan base", that perhaps it is time for him to move on from these AC Utilities boards... seeing as how he doesn't support any AC Utilities anymore."

I didn't look at the source code, but ElTank was a really, really... amateur? programming effort. I only really got to look at it when I was hacking it to bypass authentication, but it was Visual Basic (which should be the first clue) and nothing special.

Well actually his ethics fixed a long standing problem at the fringes of decal all the private combat macros that M$ was willing to ignore. It forced M$ making it so they could no longer ignore it, when ELTank released almost every dungeon that was worth any XP on an hourly basis had a closed private macro fellow.
Lots of players benifited but even more did not before Elgarl released ELTank. He only leveled the playing field for those who didnt have access to the private macros.
We all lost when M$ used Asherons Call as a research project on internet behavior. <-- the real culprit to the whole debate.

The fact that we live at the bottom of a deep gravity well,
on the surface of a gas covered planet going around a nuclear fireball 90 million miles away
and think this to be normal is obviously some indication of how skewed our perspective tends to b

Just because something is in Visual Basic doesn't make it amateur.. I'm not going to go that far to knock it.
He did a respectable job for programming it for what it was. It had a lot of code, and only got bigger over the years.
The language does not make the programmer. It is up to the programmer to decide how to use the language.
I know a lot of older developers that wouldn't hardly use anything except VB, and they'd knock the socks off of most other programmers I know. They were hardcore. Using Visual Basic didn't change that. It was preference.
That said... ELTank didn't "level" anything. It gave macros to the public and to those who didn't deserve it (not that anyone did).
I was never a fan of macros, but the macros that DID exist were written by developers whom mostly did it to see if they could, and didn't even care about using them. At least it was contained and private. Elgar made it public and made it an issue.

They added ninjas to EO, and he threw a fit because he couldn't UCM there.
That was when he said he wasn't supporting it anymore. Later it morphed into a billing issue.
Correct. But the orginal poster wanted the story of Eltank.
Once upon a time a gent from England decided he'd like the infamy of destroying a game. Then when he seen that the game had been reduced to only a 100 to 300 people per server on peak hours, he tried to break the camels back and through a hissy fit because people couldn't UCM anymore.
Then when a few schillings were missing because of exchange rates he tried to stick knife the player community in the back. When we all know that his paypal account more than made up for a few pounds he lost due to exchange rates. Sadly for him, he over estimated how people still like the game more than his plugin. He truely was worse than Gman or Nummie or any evil in game character and he played the role well. Sadly, instead of Turbine or the players slaying him...he retreated like the little puppy dog he is.

Tim,
Im sorry, but you're the ignorant one. His public release destroyed the game. Go have a smoke, pull your head from your girth, and come back and apologize.

Destroyed the game eh? I don't see any destruction. I see Olthoi and Shadows have destroyed a few towns though. I think you let a simple little plug-in ruin your fun. I used to use Eltank all the time. See I still play AC, even when Eltank is not around. It didn't ruin the game when it was released and it didn't ruin the game when it was shut down. I enjoyed it however.

People all have their opinions on this subject. Let's talk about facts, which non of us can deny nor change. The population numbers did NOT decrease when Elgar pulled El Tank, and haven't in the months since. They are identical to the numbers in the months before El Tank death.
Seems the death of El Tank didn't hurt Turbine, help Turbine, NOR drive away any customers from the game. End of story.
