That's EXACTLY my thoughts. I liked Sammy solo, think he's a great singer.
I loved VH with Dave, thought his solo stuff sucked.
VH with Sammy stunk on ice. The only good VH is VH with Dave. Nowadays, I'm not sure..

It's not like Journey who went and got a dead ringer vocally for Steve Perry, and began selling out large arenas again. The fans come expecting to hear the old standards and they get Neal Schon who has always hated the ballads and who began as a death metal type band going back to his roots. Go to a Journey concert. In the middle of every damn song the new phillipino kid goes off to a dark corner of the stage while Schon does a two minute gitar solo. In the middle of Journey's performance, Schon gets off like a 6 minute shred session on the axe while the fans boo, wanting to hear Faithfully.
At least Hagar's Halen was palatable and mostly consistent with their earlier, happy, music for music's sake 80s rock and roll.

I liked both Van Halen and Van Hagar. If I had to pick one I liked better it would be with Hagar.
