Getting pants that fit would help. Those are a few sizes too small! It makes the gut look bigger not smaller.

Yes, this is true. I wear these ones with the belt -- thus the belt loops! -- and they rest a fair bit lower with the belt.
Actually, these pants would not fit properly even with a wider waist, if worn with suspenders. The crotch is entirely too high for that.
