So I am in a bit of a conundrum in that I am trying to quit my job but I am the health insurance provider for the entire family. I applied for individual coverage with a couple of outside companies and they approve it for BT and the kids but reject me because of the pre-existing conditions BS. I wish they would give me an option for a rider that excludes any treatment related to those conditions (which have all been resolved but apparently that doesn't matter) for say a year. Usually this is an option but they just flat out refuse to cover me. Sadly any and all of my health issues that I do have seem to be related with my work environment. I first started getting sick a month or two after I started working here and have noticed that the few times I took an extended vacation, I felt fine after a few days. I am so tired of being in pain and feeling miserable and I hate the job that it only makes sense to quit. I want to go back to school anyway so this would be the ideal time to do so.

In any case, what options are there out there for peeps with no health insurance when it comes to routine wellness care. Overall all of my doc appts have shown that I am as healthy as a horse (whatever the heck that really means) but I do get the occasional sinus infection or like recently, I had a bout of strep throat. Do you just go to a quick care place? Are there other health coverage options I am not thinking of? Meh. With my luck I will end up with some rare cancer the day after my coverage stops from work...sigh.

Under HIPAA, you can not be denied health insurance coverage due to pre-existing conditions if get a new job (that offers health insurance to its employees) or attend a school (that offers health insurance to it's students) and apply for that insurance within 60 days of leaving your old plan, as long as your previous plan covered you for at least 1 year.

Since you have the right to COBRA your coverage from your current plan for up to 18 months, you can leave your job and keep your current insurance for that long....although it is going to cost a lot more. You do not have continue family coverage under COBRA, you can elect to continue coverage just on yourself and buy a private plan for the rest of the family.

So you could keep your current coverage for the next year and a half after leaving work, and then when you attend school or find another job (that offers health insurance) you can not be blocked from obtaining it due to pre-existing conditions.

Finally, pre-existing condition denials are illegal starting Jan 1, 2014. So you actually wont have any problem with them in another 5 months.

Opinion = fact. Anecdote = proof. Political label more important than either of those.

I'll have to see how much the COBRA would cost on just me, that might be an option. I assumed it was for the same coverage you had when you left. Then again if it is $800 or more there is no way, like I said, I am healthy and this would just be for 6 months or so, at that time I could apply for a policy through the state here. They just won't cover anyone that has had insurance for at least 6 months. I'll have to see if the school has an insurance policy still and what kind of credit load is needed to apply. This is all leading up to us possibly moving sometime in the next 6-8 months so I am not planning on getting another job. Getting the house cleaned out and fixed up will be my "job". Thanks for the input.
