Can't believe it has already been ten years since he sat at that desk and promised it would be closed.

fine, yes, sorry, he hasn't been in office ten years. I do think he might have put a higher priority on getting Guantanamo shut down, he did have a Democrat-controlled legislature during his first two years in office.

I agree he should have tried harder, but where was he supposed to send them?

I agree, he should have tried harder... but I still don't see how you can blame this on him when all he had was opposition, even from his own party.

I'm afraid I have to agree. It becomes a real dilemma when no country on the planet is willing to take them, except for the very countries we don't want them to go back to (and I can't even remember if those countries were willing or not). I believe there have been a very scattered few who have been sent back to their home countries (I could be mistaken) but what about the rest of them?
All presidents, no matter what they'd like to do, will often not have the power to do so, either due to unforeseen complications, or due to Congress. The president is unable to pass laws- he has to persuade Congress to do so. Congress is where the real power lies. The president and even the Supreme Court have extremely limited powers, limited to certain circumstances. The president's biggest tool/weapon is influence, and if he fails at that, then he is hardly more than a figurehead.

Exactly. People who are blaming Obama for Guantanimo Bay (and other assorted things) are forgetting that the President isn't an emperor or a king, he doesnt' have that much power. It's hard to remember that after Bush's dumb ass.

Exactly. I'm glad they released a statement that they oppose it, but it's a no brainer that it's being done for election purposes. Why? Because the Obama Administration released a White Paper which was published back in March which contains a lot of similar draconian measures that mirror what SOPA and PIPA want to do.

Considering his VP Biden has been a career long puppet for the MPAA and RIAA and his DOJ is filled with former MPAA and RIAA lawyers that are pushing for this shit, I don't exactly believe him
Shocking!
