I thought it was quite rude to cut the original Anakin out of Ep 6. Maybe I don't want to see HC at the end and be reminded of his terrible acting? I really don't care if Lucas tinkers, but at least make the originals available to those who would rather see them.

GL is such an egotistic bastard. Yes, they were his movies, but the ungodly sums of money he made from them was because of the fans' love for the original. If not for that success, the original prints would probably be crumbling away in some warehouse, and he'd likely have no desire to go back and re-do them.

Update:
Lucas is not only changing the visuals and dialogue for the upcoming 3D release, he's also re-recording some of John Williams' score.

Lucas: I want my movies to cash in on the "Disney" demographic - there's more money there.
Nerds: We want your movies to be gritty and dark and adult, no more of this stupid code of who should shoot first, no more teddy bears, and no more Jarjar assfoolery.
Lucas: Sorry nerds, there's more Disney demographic dollars to be had than nerd demographic dollars. Plus you nerds need to STFU, I didn't go through life as a nerd being picked on by jocks and everyone only to make it big and then get picked on by nerds too. Screw you guys!

spoilers covered for anyone planning to read the books
if what i've read is to be believed lucas is also the reason it was decided that anakin solo died in the vong war when he was the best new jedi character in ages and up to that point was being perfectly set up as an excellent replacement for luke. this was one of the worst choices ever because it not only removed one of the best new characters it set the tone for further poor writing ideas later in the series. the original idea was that jacen solo was going to sacrifice himself during the war and lucas decided it needed to be changed.
