There was a special for I think the 200th episode of Cheers. I had recorded it off network TV on VHS and I think it's long gone now, but, they did a retrospective on a lot of the great "moments" with Coach...
I would say that Woody's character coming into that series was one of the most, if not THE most successful introduction of a new key character since M*A*S*H did it with Col. Potter stepping in for Lt. Col. Henry Blake.
Certainly one of the only successful ones that late in the shows run.
A lot of shows just change the main character and hope that nobody notices(Roseanne with Becky, Bewitched with Darren, Fresh Prince with Vivian)
edit: And the list of characters who were meant to be minor but saved the show could be endless...
