America is supposed to be the land of freedom and opportunity, but conservatives seek to close it off every chance they get. The system of quotas, fees, and red tape we have now was expressly conceived to prevent poor brown/yellow people from coming here.

The America for Americans only ideal completely contradicts the true notion of the American dream. What made this country great was that we opened ourselves up to everyone. 100 years ago, we let millions of people immigrate through Ellis Island, and we only turned them ~2% of them because they were either sick or criminals. Immigration is the ultimate expression of the free market and the American dream, and conservatives have turned it into a twisted mess because of racism and fear.

well I agree with you on most points except the first one. The US has no official language, and it does not have a culture, it is more a mix of many cultures. Only if you accept the fact that the only real culture to the US is the Native Americans, which is slowly dieing out can you say the US has its own culture.

What defines a culture? Unique cultural norms/shared views? Food? Music? I'd say all of those definitely exist in the US, especially on the east coast where people have been settled for a longer time. But that's not to say they don't exist out west, they just haven't had as long to mature. If you are arguing that there is no centralized culture to the US as a whole, I'd agree to an extent but I'd also say the entrepreneurial and capitalistic spirit that exists in America is pretty unique. And with a country as big as the US, it makes more sense to have regional cultures versus one national one anyways.

Yeh the regional cultures that exist in the US haven't had as long to settle as many places around the world, but to say they don't exist is rather ignorant IMO.

It's very easy to demand that others spend a large effort acquiring citizenship when you yourself were born into it.

Now address what Nailer said. Or is this random quote day?

I miss the old days before I changed the rules and the moderators could edit people's messages and put in things like "I am an idiot".
