Certifications matter for your first job. Beyond that, they aren't going to be too important, unless you're a dumbass who can't get a good reference to save his life.

Just a tip in the event you are interested in government defense contractor (IT-related) or government defense IT positions, certifications are mandatory. Which one depends upon the application you are supporting in the event of a contractor or whatever systems you are expected to support as a gov't employee.

Yeah, I have no certs either. Nothing trumps experience.

Certs are a good way to make sure you are learning the right stuff though. I've used cert guides to direct my learning before but never bothered to certify or learn all the tedious crap they usually require.

I actually have, or used to have not sure where it is now, 2 free cert exam test coupons or whatever that I got in college for Microsoft. I don't think they're valid anymore but if you're CS/IT in college I would check dreamspark.com I hear certified SQL architects can make a lot though on contract work if you don't mind traveling a lot. I always wanted to be a (whatever acronym they call architect these days) in SQL Server or windows development, not that I am great at all in writing the specific scripts or coding but the architecture I think I would love to do.

My reason for getting certs is to compensate for my lack of education. I am in the field and gaining experience, but I want an edge in getting a better job without the hassle of going back for more school. I work full time and have my kiddos.

Might as well go for it and get the ones that allow you to teach.

MCSE, MCT, MCSA, CCNA, CCNP, CCENT, and you might consider getting the Linux administrator stuff, and as well as Unix, and SQL, if you wanna dabble in DBA stuff. Also there are some certs for security specialists.

Dont worry I will give my opinion anyways.

maybe just a tad... I'm a firm believer, after 2 years of community college, those who can, do... those who can't, teach at community college.
