Agreed. I really think The X-Files would have been unanimously considered the best horror/drama show of the 1990s if not for such a slow plot build.
But then again, that's what made it great. If you've seen every episode and have half a brain (and some concentration) I doubt you'd argue with me when I say that it's one of the greatest television shows ever made.

I think the only things that have come close were maybe Fringe and Torchwood. But even they don't really come anywhere near X Files

There was just fantastic writing on that show. The one episode that got pulled after they aired it with the inbreeding hillbillies was awesome.
