I spend about 600 a month on groceries now.

Back in college it was around 60 a month. I would have starved if it wasn't for girlfriends feeding me.

I go through a big bag of chicken breasts every 1.5-2 days so I usually end up with ~$60 in chicken breasts

then whatever the cost of olive oil, brown rice, and oatmeal when I run out

I don't get how some people can live on anything much less, wtf do you people eat trash all day and/or are 2 feet tall so metabolic requirements don't matter much?

I thought college kids lived on ramen, mac and cheese, and hot dogs?

Yeah I'm at about the $50 range. I wouldn't be comfortable going any lower than that, though I know a lot of people do it. I'd be interested to know how Sliyurs pulls it off.

Oh and DE sounds like he led a baller life in college.

and by the end of the semester they're in the hospital from malnutrition

less than $50 must be heavy heavy processed carbohydrates

Heh, during my last quarter of college, one of my assignments was to create a blog, so I made one about eating on $40/week.

I am guessing around 30-50 a week now that I am a grad student. When I was in undergrad it was $0... just used the dining plan on campus/had a scholarship that paid for it.

I also eat pretty healthy... usually salmon/chicken for dinner... rice/salad and some fruit... I do buy at Sam's club so usually buy in bulk too.

I honestly have found it cheaper to make my own food than buying cheap/crap food.

Its called being poor and making just too much money to get any aid for food, health insurance, or rent. I'd rather eat $30 of food a week and have a comfortable bed to sleep in than eat like a king and live in a van down by the river.

Jesus. I couldn't send my kid off to college on that little amount of money.

Buying things on sale and freezing works for me. There is no way in hell I'm paying premium for chicken breasts when there are tons of other meats that cost almost half as much per pound. And no, I'm not talking trotters and crap like that.

Best purchase lately was a 17-pound pork shoulder we got for less than a buck a pound. Cut it up, froze most, lasted a hell of a long time and was really tasty.

Well, I basically eat sandwiches for every meal lol. They can be very cheap.

Breakfast = oatmeal, lunch = sandwich, dinner = a variety of things, this is really the only meal I spend money on. Lot of chicken and rice or seafood (I get seafood basically free from the family since they are all fisherman in Alaska).
