I think it's because of cultural history. Americans largely come from European stock and the choice of drug in Europe has always been alcohol. Marijuana comes from...where? Turkey? From the East from the perspective of Europeans and from the South from the perspective of Americans, such as Mexico. It's strange and foreign, and as such associated with outsiders and often, enemies. As such it was demonized and persecuted. To this day people believe all sorts of myths about marijuana. How it'll make you stupid (alcohol won't?), how it's a gateway drug (alcohol isn't?), how it'll destroy lives (alcohol won't?)...
But I'm not here to lecture and write an essay, just pointing out what a double standard there is.

my best was waking up drunk. made the workday WAY more interesting

I've had some nasty ones..
one of the worst was probably the time I was passed out for 24 hours and then threw up for 2 days after that.
