if they are an authentic mexican restaurant it might be because they probably do business like they do in mexico....in alot of towns most places shut down for a few hours in the afternoon. This time is called the "siesta" which is where the stereotype of "siestas" and sleep and/or lazy mexican/hispanic people come from. What most people dont know is that alot of places stay open really late in mexico as well til like 11-12 or even later. At least thats what my sister experienced when she did a study abroad in Mexico.
This. It is like that in all of latin culture.
The entire city will shut down for a couple of hours during the day and everyone goes home to take a nap. It's really frustrating at first, but then you just learn to nap with them lol.

seems like your day off would be a day to get some things done. Now if every thing is closed that would be kinda of hard to do.

It really does just take some getting used to. Like in Argentina, everyone usually started at 8am, then everything is closed from 1-4 except restaurants and cafes. They're back usually from 4-10 though.
So essentially most people work 8-10 every day, just a split. I HATE SPLIT SHIFTS. Just sayin'.
