Men's Wearhouse (and Jos. A. Bank) are both about the same deal. Until or unless you can afford to start paying upwards of $2k for a suit, MW and JAB will both give you just as good a suit as anywhere else in the "inexpensive" suit category.

Master tailors are kind of hit or miss. I lived in a town where the tailor was not so hot and where the tailor that worked at Men's Wearhouse 5 miles away knew the guy with the little shop because he got a whole bunch of cleanup work from that guy's screwups...

Indeed- just because a tailor is a "mom and pop" person with a small shop doesn't mean they're going to be good. I'd never bring in an expensive item for tailoring to someone who had never done work for me before.

Conversely, not all department store tailors are horrid either. Some of them are very good at what they do.

I don't consider every tailor with a shop a master tailor. Look for reviews, ask around the businessmen in town.

Looks like it will depend on who has the best sale going on. I'd like to stay around $500-750 for suit only.

If you're not spending upwards of $2k on a suit, doing research on a tailor is kind of... well... it doesn't really matter with a suit under that quality. Hell, a solid tailor will probably tell you that there's only so much they can do with a suit of such low to marginal quality... It's like taking your Buick to the Porsche dealer to have a tuneup done...

That same little town I lived in had a real honest to goodness cobbler too. Now THAT guy did excellent work and resoled maybe 7 or 8 pairs of shoes for me over the time I lived there, very inexpensively too.

For $2k (plus whatever any alterations would cost) you could probably just go to the tailor and have the suit custom made right from the get-go.

I believe that though I've never really had cause to wear more than the sub $2k suit category myself - the tailor with the shop in town that I spoke about above would bitch about "cheap" suits everyone brought him to alter...

Well, people need suits and not everyone can afford a really pricey suit.

I'm just basing my custom-price guesstimate off what I know of fabric prices, measurement requirements, amount of fabric needed (plus notions) and time involved making something to a specific fit.

Jos A Bank, tends to have better quality suits than Men's Warehouse. They have some cheap stuff too, but if you watch for the sales you can pick up some nice suits for a pretty good price. Nothing like a $2k+ suit, but nice enough that you don't feel like you are wearing a cheap suit.

They're good if you wait for one of the frequent sales. I got like 2 suits, a sport coat, and 2 shirts for $500 with decent quality...
