"Jupiter is thought to consist of a dense core with a mixture of elements, a surrounding layer of liquid metallic hydrogen with some helium, and an outer layer predominantly of molecular hydrogen.[30] Beyond this basic outline, there is still considerable uncertainty." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jupiter

If you can't stand on it, it can't be a planet. Everyone knows you HAVE to be able to stand on a planet for it to be one.

Also, if they know that, if they start paying you, that all you're going to do is go out and buy booze, they're unlikely to start.

Trust me. It's there. And the "surface" is a point at which the atmosphere is ten times greater than at ground level on Earth. So there is not a true surface.

LOL

Someone doesn't understand how grants work and how scientists are paid, and why there are so many unpaid slave labor... er I mean... grad students and interns in the science world...

No. It's really pretty easy to understand if you just think about it. Early in the creation of the solar system there was much more debris floating around. Now Jupiter, being such a large target and having so much mass had the ability t catch much more than the other planets after they coalesced. And there is no doubt every planet took a lot of strikes. But, the gas giants had one more advantage. They had a gaseous buffer. If an iron meteorite struck the planet it's momentum would be greatly absorbed by the gas. So, it would more slowly sink into the planet. And because of its composition two facts can be deduced.....there is no evidence from observable craters, and the hard surface cannot be seen thru all the gas.

And this class would be why scientists say it cannot be confirmed. But any thinking person would realize the core is there, however small it may be.

I understand. It's kind of how a husband ends an argument with his wife he knows he is losing. He just says, "Aww eff it."

Listen, I don't know what you're babbling about.

But everyone knows about Jupiter being a gas giant and having a solid core.

If you've taken 7th grade science, you know this.

I have no idea why you had to go out of your way to let everyone know that you knew this very common nugget of information in thread about booze.

Quick now explain fermentation of alcohol!
