Our little girl was fine in the car. We just brought her toys and a tray for play and snacks and she just fell asleep if she got tired or bored. She had literally traveled about 6,000 miles by car by the time she was three.

Everyone's kid is different, but mine couldn't stand being in a car seat for more than a couple hours at a time.

From baby till now (6) my guy has done fine in the car for 7 hour trips.

Boise, Idaho.
Fargo>Billings>Bozeman>Butte>Missoula>Riggins>McCall>Boise. 24hour drive.
Lots of hot springs when you get near Idaho. http://www.amazon.com/Hiking-Springs-Pacific-Northwest-Regional/dp/0762736232
Lolo Hot springs just on the other side of Missoula is commercial but there are alot of natural hotsprings with short hikes.
snow, wildlife, peace and quiet, & dinner with uncle Nerf.
